The steam condition raised core temperature more (+1.61°C vs +1.16°C), pushed heart rate up further, and scored markedly higher on physiological strain — because saturated air stops sweat evaporating, which is the body’s main cooling mechanism. The dry sauna, meanwhile, produced twice the fluid loss (0.72kg vs 0.36kg), so hydration matters most on the dry side.
Practical translation: don’t judge intensity by the thermometer. Fifteen minutes in a steam room is not the “easy version” of fifteen minutes in a sauna — it can be the opposite.
What the health research says
This is where the comparison stops being even. The long-term outcome studies people cite about heat bathing — the 2015 Finnish cohort in JAMA Internal Medicine (2,315 men over ~21 years, 63% lower sudden-cardiac-death risk in 4–7×/week users vs once-a-week) and the 2018 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review linking regular use to lower blood pressure and reduced dementia risk — were done in traditional dry saunas. Steam rooms have no comparable body of long-term research. What they have is subjective appeal: warm saturated air feels genuinely soothing on airways and skin, and that comfort is a fine reason to use one. It just isn’t evidence of treatment — for colds, congestion or anything else.
